Varenna a medieval village on Lake Como

Rare beauty. Breathtaking, it is the picturesque, ancient village of Varenna, one of the most exciting destinations on the entire Lake Como.

Varenna is a set of perfect elements: water, mountains, buildings, colors and scents that must be enjoyed as a whole.
The village rests on a small triangular promontory, overlooked by a steep cliff at the top of which, from a distance, one can see what remains of the ancient castle of Vezio. The beauty of the place must have greatly impressed even the most famous Lombard queen Teodolinda, who lived between the 6th and 7th centuries: a very ancient legend has it that this cultured and sensitive queen, loved and respected by the people, spent long periods here in her old age, and some even go so far as to say that she even died here in 627.

Of very ancient foundation, the village of Varenna appears to us today intact in its medieval structure, a period of which it preserves the houses, narrow stairways, narrow streets, arches and arcades by the lake. Arriving at the public pier, one begins a romantic pedestrian path, called in fact "passeggiata dell'Amore," which leads to the old village of Varenna and more precisely to the Riva dei Marmisti.

One only has to try this path suspended between the rocks and the lake to understand why it was renamed with this name: especially in the springtime, one can add to the already elevated enjoyment of the landscape and its breathtaking setting, also the scent of the blossoming wisterias and the hydrangeas of the adjacent villas that color this picturesque promenade even more.

There is never an end to pleasure in the beautiful village of Varenna, as this romantic route ends at a charming little harbor, now packed with cafes and eateries, where once again the splendid colors of Lake Como, its mountains and the village's painted houses are brought out.
